Expanded Narrative Workshop

In this session we learnt about interactive narratives and alternate narrative structures. As part of this we looked at in-browser narrative games including You Are Jeff Bezos and The Dark Room. This has gotten me quite keen on the idea of choosing this brief. Inspired by this workshop I began thinking about an interactive narrative structure that would allow you to explore a space. This included taking pictures of some of the Harrow area. I live near this tunnel system for getting around the larger roads. Every time I walk through it I can’t help but notice how maze-like it feels. I’m perhaps thinking about themes of colonialism, but not sure where that would lead.

Four Corners Gallery: Now Filming

This week's gallery visit was really interesting. Seeing the history of the East of London and the way that people had been creating art and media for other people in their local community and to then reach outwards was really inspiring. I think this has shifted my focus, I now find myself wanting to create a project which is aimed quite specifically at a British audience, or at least those who understand a British cultural context. It was also really interesting to see how working people were organising to create their own political narratives for themselves, rather than simply being subject to them. This has piqued my interest in creating something explicitly political.

Wordless Picture Narrative Workshop

We had a workshop this week to create a story without any words. Luisa Riveria talked to us about how illustration can be used to talk to people all over the world, bypassing language boundaries, and speaking to cultural similarities we may have. We had to pick some kind of natural process and depict it though a comic. I chose to show the process of a flower opening. This was a useful experience as it taught me the importance of keeping the frame consistent when you're not using many panels per pages. I’m quite excited by the concept for this brief, but I’m struggling to come up with any ideas that I would want to create.

Photogrammetry EMS

The photogrammetry workshop was very interesting. It was a lot of fun scanning people and being scanned. I’m not quite sure where I would use this within my current project, but it has gotten me thinking again about how I can use other forms of media in my project.

I’m thinking back to my earlier idea of using photographs to build the environments of my work and have taken photos of a local Sainsbury's to create backgrounds for my project.

Also thinking about using scale to make the supermarket feel overwhelming.

Heath Robinson Museum: Ralph Steadman

The simplicity of some of Heath Robinsons images is impressive. In many cases, if I had drawn those images, I would feel like I should add more detail and more structure. This is worth keeping in mind for my own project. Robinsons use of simplicity allows him to pull the viewers' attention and focus with ease. The point of the image becomes very clear.
